Formerly managed by the City of Tulsa and currently managed privately by Tulsa Zoo Management Inc, Tulsa Zoo is a 34 ha non-profit zoological park located in one of the largest municipal parks, Mohawk Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Tulsa Zoo is involved in several conservation efforts including efforts to limit the use of palm oil in addition to encourage ocean conservation known as FrogWatch USA.
Interesting Facts About the Tulsa Zoo
• Formerly the North American Living Museum and awarded the best new exhibit in 1978, The Robert J. LaFortune WildLIFE Trek is the zoo’s four-building complex. Since 2013 each building focuses on several species and their adaptations to various habitats. Animals housed in this complex include grizzly bears, albino alligator, Siberian cranes, and seahorses.
• In 1957 the zoo built its Dave Zucconi Conversation Center featuring a wide variety of animals including birds, fish, primates, reptiles. Some animals exhibited include a blue iguana native to the Grand Cayman Islands, american flamingos, Fiji iguanas, Komodo dragons, saki monkeys, wrinkled hornbills, snakehead fish, and radiated tortoises.
• Tulsa Zoo’s Lost Kingdom which includes an Elephant Interpretive Center covers a 1 ha area for three elephants. Visitors to the zoo can view the elephants from both an indoor and outdoor area and features an elephant demonstration yard.
• In 2002 at the end of a four-year fund-rising campaign the zoo opened its Penguin Habitat housing a flamingo colony, black and white ruffed lemurs and California sea lions. The exhibit which currently houses over 20 penguins is designed with geo-thermal heating and cooling to regulate water temperature.
• In 2005, Microsoft Game Studios in a contest aimed to promote their computer game named Tycoon 2 awarded Tulsa Zoo the title of “America’s Favorite Zoo”. The contest which offered a first prize of $25,000 recognized votes from zoo visitors across the United States for many noteworthy zoos, including the Bronx Zoo and the San Diego Zoo.
• In 2012 the zoo opened its Helmerich Sea Lion Cove exhibit featuring a saltwater pool, large underwater viewing area, waterfall, a themed holding building in addition to a large sheltered seating area for visitors.
• Funded by a city-wide campaign Tulsa Zoo’s African black-footed penguin exhibit was popularized following the donation of 1.8 m sculptures which show a penguin bearing specific characteristics based on its owner or location or to the organizations who donated to the exhibit. Currently there are 29 of these sculptures fondly known as “Tulsa Penguins” located throughout Tulsa.
• Tulsa Zoo’s African Plains features a variety of animals including African wild dogs, giraffes, meerkats, and lions. The zoo’s Mary K. Chapman Rhinoceros Reserve which encompasses a 3-area outside yard and new barn was opened as a replacement to an older facility also houses the zoo’s two white rhinoceroses.
• The zoo’s northeastern Asian Area features several exhibits including the Siamang Island which hosts siamangs and spectacled langur monkeys and an Elephant Enclosure housing three Asian elephants.
• In 2012 Tulsa Zoo released its 20-year Master Plan which included the construction of its Lost Kingdom Exhibit to highlight rare species native to Asia. To fund the exhibit the Helmerich Foundation donated the zoo’s new Helmerich Tiger exhibit as part of the Lost Kingdom complex. Other donations include the new snow leopard facility by The Hardesty Family Foundation which features a state-of-the-are enclosure allowing visitors to get up close with the endangered species.
• In 2014 the zoo announced its plans for expansion which included the construction of naturalistic habitats for its Komodo dragons, Malayan tigers and snow leopards.
• Tulsa Zoo has Children’s Zoo which allows children to get up close with Katadin snd Southdown sheep, Nigerian and Nubian goats, rabbits, earless Lamancha goats as well as several species native to the Australian Outback.

Tulsa Zoo’s Chimpanzee Connection Web Cam
Completed in 1991, Tulsa Zoo’s Chimpanzee Connection large outdoor island provides visitors access to an expansive climbing structure, ropes, caves, a termite mound, cargo nets, and a vast area of vegetation. Chimpanzee Connection’s cage-less open air habitat allows visitors an unrestricted indoor view of this amazing species through an inch-and-a-quarter glass.
